Welcome to the third blog post in my Breakfast Club-inspired, teen musical theatre repertoire series.  If you’re just tuning in, I have been compiling repertoire lists for teenage actors/characters based on the five high school social archetypes presented in John Hughes’ 1985 cult classic film, The Breakfast Club.  So far, I’ve posted song lists for nerdy teenage boy characters and preppy teenage girl characters.  Today’s list features songs for sporty teenage boy characters (aka ‘jocks’).  Out of the five high school archetypes presented in Hughes’ film, this one is the rarest in musical theatre today.  I suspect most musical theatre writers aren’t huge sports fans (with some exceptions, of course).

Over the years, many television, film, and musical theatre writers have struggled to create multi-layered, teenage athlete characters.  In many cases, the characters either end up being stereotypical ‘dumb jocks’ or under-developed supporting players.  To be fair, this is sometimes intentional.  Friday Night Lights is a rare example of a popular media work where teenage athletes are portrayed as actual people with real problems.  In general, musical theatre still has a ways to go in regards to this issue, but there has been progress in recent years.  Below, I have compiled a list of ten songs from contemporary musicals (2000-present) written for sporty teenage boy characters.  Some of these songs are serious in tone and others are more campy.  If you’re an older actor but ‘read’ as younger on stage, feel free to sing any of these as well.

P.S. If you need assistance choosing appropriate repertoire for yourself or for your students, please check out my new repertoire consulting business, The Repertoire Guru.
